Krystal and Peter are film makers in the North West of England and they also run Cinematopia a small film festival. Here is what they say about Cinematopia.

They organise CINEMATOPIA which is Preston’s only regular MOVIE NIGHT hosted by the Mad Ferret and Kitsch Monkey Productions Krystal is the Kitsch Monkey.

They Screen a weird and wonderful, themed programme of short film, music video, animation and digital media and topped off with a cult feature film, this is surely the most relaxing way to enjoy a beer or two – and it’s FREE! Be scintillated! Be dazzled! Be amazed!
Krystal Gault
That’s is what you get for having your movie nights in a pub, the films are the free bit and the beer you probably have to pay for.

Seems that is it a great idea to be making films and showing films too. Keep the interest up for film in general and it has to be good for meeting other people interested in film and movies.

Peter is the tech guy of the team and uses Final Cut Pro to edit their movies. He teaches film and sound design to bring in extra cash, for making their movies. It is getting difficult for all film makers to get financing for making movies. I even saw a report that stated that Hollywood will be making a third less movies

Mac20Q Podcast 1 Frank Corfield

I have known Frank since we were at art college together. He went to Stoke to study Fine Art and I went to Leeds to study Furniture Design and then Fine Art.  We have travelled to Germany together to work in the summer vacations in the Becks Bier Brewery in Bremen. We both had German girlfriends at the same time. Loads of funny stories to tell since 1980 to the point where the families have grown up and he is living in Wales and I am in Spain.

I have always been impressed with Franks’ dedication to his painting and his art. I went off in the direction of using art for a sign business while Frank kept at his painting. When making the visit to his house a few times over the years his house would always be full of paintings. When he came with his family to Ireland to visit me he would spend much of the time walking with a box of paints under his arm. I have some of those paintings still.

Frank has been featured on Welsh television, and has had numerous exhibitions of his work. Seeing as his family is all into art he has had a family exhibition when his wife and two young daughters exhibited paintings too. I love the paintings by Esme also. The family  sold some of their work alongside Franks’ sales.

This interview was recorded here in Spain just after a drawing session in my living room. They were taking it in turns to be the model, my son Jack included, who is also at art college. It is all a family thing. I put the sound clips from the interview on top of of some video I shot on a trip to to make some drawings of the local landscape.

Had a great very good chat with the Bart Busschots from Ireland. He takes charge, hosts the International Mac Podcast and does his best to keep some order over the rest of the Scallywags. I will be one of the scallywags tomorrow on the next live show. Should be fun.

Bart has back up paranoia leading to the use of Rsync and Arrsync to do back ups a plenty. Along with pirate humour, a wooden leg and a parrot on the shoulder type of pirate you should note.
Doesn’t think to highly of Ubercaster for podcasting – reckons it is too flakey in use. Which is why all of the people on the IMP do a recording of the show just in case it is needed.

He likes to drink coffee while using his favourite application – NetNewswire. I have been trying it out since recording the interview and I think I like it but I don’t like coffee. I wonder if it works with tea?

I had an interesting chat with Pat Mahon from Carlow in Ireland about how he uses his Mac. He has  a MacBookPro and a MacMini. We go through the 20 questions and talk about loads of stuff along the way.

Links to some of things we talked about

and of course mine which is not up yet! – patmahon.com

I use ScreenFlow to capture video from my Macs and also VideoCue, both from telestream. ScreenFlow has video editing capabilities that make it a worthy purchase. You can do lower thirds and titling really easy. I like the way I can easily zoom into an area of the captured video to highlight something with a video action. I can even highlight mouse clicks. I sometimes record myself with the iSight camera at the same time with ScreenFlow, sometimes with the computer audio as a separate track from the microphone audio. Good for doing narration over clips recorded.

Had a great chat with Justin and especially because I could talk to him about Ireland where I had a super 12 years as a resident in Virginia, Co. Cavan. No one ever knows where Cavan is and even some of the Irish people I have spoken to must have been asleep during the geography class at school. Two of my sons still live in Ireland going to college in Dublin.

Justin is a co presenter for a Mac podcast called Mac Craic which has an Irish slant, obviously. I subscribed to it yesterday in iTunes and I still have to listen to the first episode I have downloaded. I know that is going to be good though as Justin came across very clear, calm and collected in the interview.

In the picture you can see Justin with his Mac Craic co-presenter David, Allison from the excellent NosillaCast and the guy that fixes Honda cars.

Justin tells us how he bought a Mac off Ebay and OSX Tiger was the system he started with. Same as for me when I got the Mac Mini. Justin has to use a Windows machine at work but has used his Mac experience to try and improve his Windows experience. He is a bit of tech head and does a bit of  tech support where he works.

being totally up to date Justin gives us some news about legal decisions in France that could possibly affect iPhone users in Europe. Locking the iPhone down to single companies in a country is a pain in the rear. I would have stayed with Vodafone if I could have rather than move to Movistar, Telefonica.

We complain a bit about iTunes and the lock down that stops us getting movies and TV shows here in Europe. Justin would like to get his hands on a Drobo and we talk about back up strategies.

screenflow01The show sponsor is ScreenFlow from Flip4Mac. I use ScreenFlow to capture what I am doing on my Mac to produce screencasts, (like Don McAllister but obvious not quite as Professional) With ScreenFlow I can zoom in easily on a part of the screen to show some detail with a video event or I can use a mouse event to highlight what I am clicking on. The great part of the application is that I can edit the video captured within  ScreenFlow itself. I highly recommend it. The $99 price tag is well worth it for the facilities it has and the quality of video you can make with it.

Justin uses digital cameras, to record video and still images and puts these into iPhoto and iMovie to manipulate. Recently he has been helping his wife to make a slide show into a movie.

Justin has been know to use Crossover for Mac to be able to do some virtualisation, but prefers to keep his Mac free of Windows programs.

Justin has a horror story to tell us of how it cost about $100 to by data recovery software to get back files that were mistakenly deleted.

Another show sponsor is Mozy. A nice way to back up your files to the cloud. I downloaded the application yesterday and set it up to back up some of my files and it has been working well so far.

It has done 3 back ups including the first one. The 2nd and 3rd back ups it only moved some of the files, as in only backed up new or changed files. Sweet. Try it out for free with the up to 2GB option.

Justin gives us the low down on what it is like to buy a computer in Ireland and how there is a need to put an Apple Shop in Dublin. If Apple were to make a 15in MacBook Air he would be highly tempted to take the leap and get one.
