The MacCast

As I was walking the dog this morning I was listening to the MacCast podcast from Adam Christenson. I have a soft spot for his podcast because it was the first podcast I started to listen to when I changed to the Mac 5 years ago. He has a good mix of tips, news, new music and reviews. The reason I mention it now is because there were some handy little tips regards Snow Leopard and the use of the option key to get more info or do things, depending what you are clicking on.

  • Option click the sound icon in the menu bar and you can change the default input and output devices for your sound.
  • Option click the mobile me icon and you see more information about what parts of the service were backed up when.

Adam mentions a couple of others including the airport icon and for me I would just say that the Maccast is one of the podcasts you just have to listen to. His web site is useful too and there is also a forum on there which can be very helpful if you need to get a question answered. Adam has been interviewed on Mac 20 Questions as I don’t mind talking to the superstars of the Mac podcasting world as well as the ordinary users like you and me.

Mac20Q Podcast 49 James Topping

James Topping
I am loving doing this podcasting because I get to talk to a whole pile of excellent people. In this podcast I was talking with James Topping who lives in Liverpool but has the sense to be an Everton fan. I like blue what can I say??

He tells me what he does with his Macs and about how they get commandeered by his children. Not sure I believe that though, the evidence on his Mac Book Pros suggests he is a TellyTubbies fan.

James is keen to upgrade his computers one by one and has a notion that upgrading in time for Snow Leopard will be a good idea seeing as Snowy will be leaving behind the Power PC users. It had to happen at some point in time. Apple is a forward looking company and will not let itself be hampered by the legacy stuff, in the same way as Microsoft is held back by that sort of backwards compatibility issues.

In my ramble I talk about why I am pleased to have Godaddy onboard as a sponsor. I use the service and have done for a long time so it is the first name on my lips when I am asked about web hosting and domain names. With the installation service of applications like WordPress, Joomla, Wikis, Forums, and things like photo sites it makes it very easy.

The only thing I don’t like is the way they like to up sell you on all of the steps you go through to get to paying for your purchases. Not a problem if you know what you want, although the default option is always no to the upgrades, so you can’t get tricked into buying more. if you want to get hosting and you want my help then let me know and I can guide you through it step by step on Skype or IM.

Rob is otherwise known as @Switchmac and he has a web site dedicated to new users of the Mac system. Some great information for switchers. Rob seems to have found it easy enough to switch but must have thought that the fears of some new users needed to be allayed.

Rob uses PDF Pen if he gets PDF document that needs to do work on and send back to other people. We talk about Crayon Physics, an iPhone game.

We talk about Garageband as a tool for making podcasts and mention Ubercaster, which people like Stu Helm swear by. I did look at Ubercaster once but decided I was happy using Garage band and AmadeusPro for making my podcasts.

Favourite software is Coda from Panic Software for making web sites and is not terrible expensive. As far as buying things off iTunes is concerned well we got talking about Spotify.

iPhonography an iPhone photography site and Evernote on the iPhone – Your external brain. Did you know you can scan things into Evernote and have it do the OCR on it to make it searchable. Rob tells me about how he uses Spaces with certain spaces for certain tasks.
