This podcast was recorded for Mac 20 Questions podcast mainly but we do spend quite a bit of time talking about photograpy, video and photo equipment.

Today’s interview is with Adam Weiss who uses a Mac Pro that is a quad processor antique and also a MacBook. Not only that he has hackintoshed a Dell mini9, just for fun and using on trips where he can’t carry much. He says it is useful but very slow in use. Good as a portable storage device and quiet to use as a recording computer and works with the microphones he has.

Adam Weiss is a successful educational podcaster and podcast consultant, as well as a sought-after digital media strategist. An expert interviewer and communicator, he aims to show that digital communication is more about story, presentation, and technique than fancy gear and tech toys.

He is the creator of the award-winning Current Science & Technology Podcast for the Museum of Science in Boston, which he hosted for more than two years. He now hosts his critically-acclaimed Boston Behind the Scenes Podcast, and has profiled everyone from street vendors to senators and astronauts in his career.

Adam also provides consultation on social networking, living with technology, web design and best practices, and general digital media strategy. He has started working in the digital video realm recently, and has been a photographer for years.

Adam does video reviews in which he shows what you can do with iPhone applications. He films using a Canon 7D SLR camera that also does video. He tells me that the main restriction would be the length of the clip you can record and that it doesn’t do autofocus while in video mode.

Adam is a podcaster too working as a podcast producer and also as the host on a podcast. One of the podcasts is a nature – science podcast. He even helps other people out with their podcasts as a podcast consultant.

In the ramble I talk about getting the upgrade to the latest version of Bento and also talk about iPhoto and being able to put keywords on photos. I learned how to do that as part of travels through the software. Actually reading a help file can be quite useful at times. In case you don’t know Bento is a database application, a smaller brother to Filemaker. There are a lot of specialist database applications but Bento I think is useful because it can be used like a multi purpose tool and will be moulded to what ever you want it to work with.

I would love to have the same camera as my son, a Sony EX1 but there was no way that my funds would run to that sort of money. For the most part what I have, the Canon Vixia HF100 does what I need anyway. The lens is good enough although I have just bought a cheap wide angle lens to put on the front of it and while it didn’t make a huge difference it did help some. I felt I needed it for a documentary style video I will be producing starting this month. I will not have a lot of space to step back and get in all of what I want to shoot in a lot of places.

The other addition is for the audio. While I was in Liverpool before Christmas there was a friend there with a similar camera to mine and he had a converter cable to go from the 3.5mm mic jack on the camera to an XLR cable with a Shure SM58 microphone on the end of that. It worked pretty good and so I have got the same. The guy from Shure was suggesting a cable that they sell costing about 60 but I found one much less than that. Maybe it will work right and maybe it won’t. At least worth a try anyway.

I had tried to use a wired lavalier mic but while it works connected to my Zoom H2 recorder it did not work in the Canon Vixia camera. To have the EX1 would be great seeing as it has XLR inputs already. I can record the audio separate with the H2 and I might still use that method for some shooting. It is just that it takes time to marry the audio back up with the video afterwards. I think I had better start saving to get a better camera.

I have just set up a Video20Q Newsletter. I will only be sending infrequently because usually if I have something to say I will put it in a blog or post onto Twitter. But after seeing a video by IzzyVideo about running a site like this he was saying that he wished he had set up something like that much earlier than he did. Here is the place to get the video from Israel Hyman. Also do check out his Video site that shows how to use FinalCut Express. which is a series of very good video tutorials.

Ross works in the Canadian Military has a 20 in iMac which came with the keyboard without the numberpad – uses neo Office and likes it – not had any problems with it at all. He had MS Office on a previous laptop and it bugged the system down too much so it had to be got rid of.
Uses a spreadsheet to catalogue his DVDs and I suggested he might look at Delicious Library
Ross has an ipod nano that he uses when exercising – there is a sensor that goes in the running shoe that somehow gives feed back about your work out. How cool is that?
Has used iMovie and tried to make a DVD with some movies downloaded from YouTube with not much success, but that could be due to the format that YouTube put out the videos in. Next on the list is to buy a guitar so that he can make use of the lessons that are in Garageband.
No iPhone yet due to the high costs of a Data plan with Rogers Communications in Canada, but would like one. Instead has the iPod touch.
Has a Gadget blog on Blogger and was using Word Space also, His wife has an art based site
Would like to see a touch screen mac because it would just be a cool thing to have.

Michael is from Houston in Texas and has a plethora of Mac computers that he uses for business and pleasure. He makes training films using Final Cut Pro and is a heavy user of Aperture. Michael has a pedigree with Macs going back to the Apple 2. Obviously this amounts to a huge amount of experience with the Mac.

He tells us a little about using classic and changing to OS X. He is not keen on using a Mouse preferring to use a trackball. He uses a Heil PR40
and USB Edirol mixer to connect it up. He reckons his PR40 is the best mic to use when you consider the antique clocks he has chiming in the background from time to time.

I use a Samson C03U mic similar to the Samson Multi-pattern Condenser Mic
both are USB mics.
I recommended AmadeusPro to him and he said he is off to the shop to buy it after we finish recording. I even passed on some tips about selecting part of a sound wave to delete so that you don’t get and extra clicks in the audio.
He reckons that Adobe will probably take some time to get a version out for Snow Leopard because they can drag their feet a bit some times in reaction to new operating systems. Multi Threading is going to be the big thing with Snow leopard and being about to make use of the multi core computers.
He told me there is a huge difference between having 2GB and 4 GB in the MacBook. So I will have to do something about putting in the extra in my MacBook too.
The office he works in is a mixture of Macs and Windows and has to use MS Excel because it is the only spreadsheet that will open the spreadsheets that get sent to him. For his personal office type of thing he will use iWork. He wishes that it wasn’t totally necessary to revolve around microsoft products in business.
Not quite a cool aid drinker but will always recommend a Mac to people when the ask what sort of computer to get.
Michael likes to use Firefox for the add ons you can use and will sometimes go back to Safari and now and then Camino. Depends on which is working the best right now, and for now it is Safari 4. Fluid gets a mention also, this is an app which you use to make a application specific to a web site.
Oovoo is used for some video chatting with his mates which include Mark Sheppard who was featured in the previous podcast and Rob Saunders who will be in a Podcast here soon and Michael uses a Logitech web cam to get the video in.

Man I have been struggling this morning with Visual Hub, VideoCue and getting a short video made. VideoCue is a teleprompter and I have used it before successfully and for some reason today I could not get it to see my Samson C03U microphone. Sometimes it would then other times it wouldn’t. Then on top of that I was not happy with the export settings and I have been fiddling around with those to get some acceptable quality of the video. Still not as good as I would have liked but maybe I should be getting out the video camera and I know I will win. It will be a good opportunity to try out iMovie 09 then.

In the end I did some restarting of the computer and editing of the export settings in VIdeoCue and then deleted the microphone and then added it back in to get it right. I still ended up with a video that was too large so I then was trying visual hub to convert it and it did not play ball. So eventually I got VideoMonkey to do the job. I also tried Stomp and that was rubbish too. I tell you it can be difficult to get to grips with all of the video codecs that are out there. I truy to stick with H.264 do convert the files to get decent size with decent quality.

Matt Hillyer from Iowa, which is somewhere in the middle of America. He is a busy fella working and studying too. He has a MacBook Pro and is a video podcaster. Although he had a Mac many years ago he is really a recent switcher, with a bit of Mac history.

He has a 24 inch screen connected to his MackBookPro. He has to use Microsoft office running in Parallels for the work side of things, but uses Pages and iWork for his studying. He able to convert pages documents to office compatible versions.

He has a whole pile of Apple products and has recently bought a turn by turn GPS application for his iPhone. He bought the Western USA maps which was a 900 mb download.

He has a 5Mb download internet connection and I tell him how lucky he is compared to my lowly 2Mb download speed. I have just got started with WiMax which is a long distance radio connection. As I am only 0.6 miles from the antenna so it is not too bad.

Matthew has been trying out the Safari 4 beta that many of us have been trying out. Did you know that it is possible to use a terminal command to put the tabs where ther were in Safari 3. I have Safari 4 but still prefer to use Firefox. I like being able to easily set the new site to open up in a new tab rather than a new window.

The choice for a microphone is a Blue Snowball USB and chose it so that no mixer was required. He tells me that the snowball is quite big but does a good job for him. With his podcasting he got an App from Boinx TV and it is a Tricaster thing so he can feed in video and produce a TV show live with it.

<itunes:summary>Matt Hillyer from Iowa, which is somewhere in the middle of America.

I mention Photoshop TV on the podcast. The guys on that have a small TV studio for producing their show, It is a great place to learn more about how to use Photoshop. Don McAllister get a mention because Matthew is so impressed with Screencasts Online.

Backups are important and that's why I always ask people about their backup strategy. Chronosync gets a mention here along with Mozy and Time Machine.
